Small Vintage Statuette Plaster St Rita of Cascia St of Hopeless Causes 8.27"
Lovely authentic statue of St Rita of Cascia. St Rita was an Augustinian nun, also called Margarita. She was born in Roccaporena in Italy in 1381. She married at the age of twelve to a a cruel and harsh man. She spent eighteen extremely unhappy years, had two sons, and was finally widowed when her husband was killed in a brawl. Both sons died as well, and Rita anxious to become a nun tried unsuccessfully to enter the Augustinians in their convent at Cascia. She was refused because she was a widow and because of the requirement that all sisters should be virgins. Finally in 1413 the order gave her entry, and she earned fame for her austerity, devotion to prayer and charity. In the midst of chronic illness, she received visions and wound on her forehead which resembled the crown of thorns. While sick in the middle of the winter, she asked someone to bring her a rose, and although it had been snowing, they found a rose and brought it to her. That is why it is still a custom in Belgium to bring roses to the sick on the remembrance day of St Rita. St Rita died on May 22 at Cascia and many miracles were reported instantly. She is known as the patron saint of hopeless causes.
